Rambo, the poorly-titled fourth film in the First Blood/Rambo saga, was yet another film that most rolled their eyes at when it was announced only to find out that the result was an excellent entry into the series, perhaps eclipsed only by the first film, First Blood. Like Sylvester Stallone‘s Rocky Balboa, it seemed clear by the ending of Rambo that the story of the character of Vietnam Special Forces veteran John Rambo had reached its full-circle conclusion. However, since its success there have been many rumors that Stallone wished to return to the character in a final entry after he finishes work on Bullet to the Head and Expendables 2.
Like how Stallone has stepped back from writing duties on those two films, Stallone has done the same for the fifth Rambo film. Sean Hood (one of the co-writers of Conan the Barbarian) spoke to Empire about his script, titled Rambo: Last Stand. First of all, Stallone does have interest in making a fifth Rambo, as Hood explains that he “met with Mr Stallone twice last year. He gave me a book, an older screenplay, and about twenty pages he’d written himself to use as inspiration for the last chapter of the Rambo saga.”
More intriguing, however, is that Hood talks about the tone of the film, saying “Millennium films did hire me to complete the screenplay and realise his story, and my hope is that he’ll eventually be inspired to do one more Rambo film, with the tone of Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven.” Now that to me is great news, because the Oscar-winning Unforgiven is one of the greatest films ever made. Perhaps Stallone would take the same path as Eastwood, who used Unforgiven as his final (to this date) western film, the genre he was best known for — as in, Stallone could make Rambo: Last Stand his final action movie. After all, Stallone is older now than Eastwood was when he made Unforgiven.
But that’s just my take — do you readers have any interest in a fifth Rambo film, or what? Let us know in the comments below.
