I don’t know about you, but when I saw 1998’s The Mask of Zorro I didn’t think “this story would be much better if it took place in the future.” But like it or not, you can look forward to seeing Zorro in Space soon, starring Gael Garcia Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries, the upcoming Casa de mi Padre) as the masked hero himself.
Okay, so the title of 20th Century Fox’s next Zorro film will not be Zorro in Space, but its working title is still the fairly pedestrian Zorro Reborn (I guess the equally generic Zorro Rises is still up for grabs) and, according to Variety, it will take place in the future. Whether that means Zorro will still use his trademark sword (maybe it will be a lightsaber) is certainly a question worth pondering about.
The script is by Glenn Gers (Mad Money) and Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy (writers of the upcoming Harker). Curiously, Sony/Columbia is also working on a more traditional Zorro film based on the 2005 eponymous novel by Isabel Allende.
Well, I guess the potential is there — though Bernal doesn’t strike me as a very dashing Zorro. Maybe that’s the whole point, actually.
