2010’s Red was one of those movies that came out of nowhere and ended up being a lot better than anyone expected it would be. Loosely adapted from the comic book by Warren Ellis and artist Cully Hamner, Red starred Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren as retired secret agents who are called back into action after being targeted. It ended up doing very well at the box office and even nominated for the Best Musical or Comedy Golden Globe, so inevitably a sequel has been talked about.
Though an August 2, 2013 release date was announced late last year after confirmation that Jon and Erich Hoeber, who wrote the original, would return to write the script, things have been quiet until now. Variety is reporting that Galaxy Quest director Dean Parisot has been picked to direct the sequel, though the release date might be flexible depending on Willis’ busy schedule. It will also depend on the schedules of Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren, who are all expected to return (although since one of them didn’t make it out of the first film alive that might require a bit of storyline trickery).
So while all the pieces are set for Red 2, it might be some time before we see the gang back together. If it’s as fun as the first one it’ll be worth it.
