2010’s Red was a moderate surprise hit last year (and did even better business overseas) and, more importantly, a whole lot of fun. It was enjoyable seeing Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, and Morgan Freeman as retired secret agents, and even more fun watching John Malkovich go full-on crazy as a retired spy, too. Earlier this year we reported that Summit commissioned Jon and Erich Hoeber, who wrote the original, to write the sequel. It’s safe to say that the project is moving forward, as not only is Bruce Willis back on board but, according to Comics Beat, Summit has set an August 2, 2013 release date for Red 2. The blurb reads “The sequel to the action-comedy hit RED, which reunites our team of retired CIA operatives as they use their old-school style to take on a new set of enemies all across Europe,” which means we might end up seeing more than just Willis return.
The film is expected to shoot after Willis wraps on A Good Day to Die Hard, which is set for a February 14, 2013 release. No word on a director or any other cast members yet, but I’m definitely looking forward to this one.
