Can we ever really get tired of Kevin Smith? Some people are saying yes, but I for one love the man. We know he is retiring from film once he finishes Hit Somebody but in the meantime we can talk about his upcoming film Red State and also his plans for after film.
Red State is a very unconventional film when you look at it from a studio point of view. Smith raised all the money for the film and is also distributing the film himself. For awhile he said that he was going to release the film on VOD before the theaters and also do a road trip tour for the film. Looks like plans have changed and the film will start running in Los Angeles from August 19-25 so that it can officially be eligible for the Academy Awards. Will the movie be nominated? I have no idea but it seems that Smith feels it should be.
Below we have a trailer for the film and also a pretty nice poster for it as well.
Not to jump ship on Red State but lets get an update on Kevin Smith post movies. It was recently rumored that he was working on a reality TV show with the premise of Pawn Stars but taking place in Smith’s comic book store. That is still being pitched around to networks but nothing has been solidified yet. Smith is also currently shooting a talk show pilot that would fall along the line of daytime talk shows/Daily Show. Here is the statement from his camp:
Smith’s reps are telling celebs that the tentatively titled Kevin Smith Project will be “a daily 30-minute entertainment talk show for syndication … The idea is a Regis and Kelly talk show at the opposite end of the day for the opposite kind of audience — the 12-34 demo. Kevin and his co-host will talk water-cooler topics at the top of the show, followed by a celebrity interview and a comedy segment from the field (a la The Daily Show). Each show will feature one celebrity interview.” The message also gives a hint as to which studios might be behind the project: “The show is being positioned to air following TMZ, in the 6-8pm time period on the Fox stations in all the major markets.” TMZ hails from Warner Bros. Television’s Telepictures unit, so that studio could be a likely home for Smith; the Fox stations also could be behind the show via their sister studio, Twentieth Television.
From the sound of things, it looks like Kevin Smith is here to stay, with or without movies.
