With the Muppets making their big screen return next month (and I’m pumped for it, especially since a big Muppets poster was installed over the subway by my apartment this week!), Deadline is also reporting that it’s time now to Dance your cares away… Worries for another day… Let the music play… Down in Fraggle Rock!
That’s right — New Regency has landed the rights to make a feature film out of Jim Henson’s 1980s television series, Fraggle Rock. The well-loved puppet program about the Fraggles, a subterranean race of creatures, and their various adventures underground accompanied by an always-awesome soundtrack. There have been various deals in place for a Fraggle Rock film since 2005, involving everyone from musician Ahmet Zappa, Cory Edwards (Hoodwinked!), the Weinstein Company, and even musical group the Scissor Sisters. No word if any of them are still involved with the project, but since a new company has taken hold of the rights I doubt it.
It hasn’t been said whether the movie will be animated or with puppets (or a mix), but I think I speak for everybody when I say I’m pulling for the puppets. There are way too many computer animated films coming out and not nearly enough puppet movies. Plus, there actually was a Fraggle Rock cartoon series on NBC that wasn’t anywhere as good as the original puppet version. So why bother changing a classic?
