You might have caught a glimpse of the name Dino De Laurentiis in the producer credit of a film or two, but unless you’re an avid film fan it’s likely you didn’t know the true extent of De Laurentiis‘ contribution to film. De Laurentiis, who died this morning in Beverly Hills at the age of 91, was involved in the production of over 500 films in his career (yes, you read that right, 500) which began in 1938 with a small acting part in the Italian film L’orologio a cucù and extended to his final producer credit, 2007’s Virgin Terrirory. After the jump we’ll list some of De Laurentiis‘ most famous (and infamous) films!
Along the way De Laurentiis produced or executive produced some of the most legendary and memorable films, including Ulysses, La Strada and Nights of Cabiria (both directed by legend Federico Fellini), Barbarella, Serpico, Death Wish, Buffalo Bill and the Indians, Flash Gordon, Ragtime, Conan the Barbarian, The Dead Zone, Dune, Manhunter, Army of Darkness, Red Dragon, and Hannibal. Of course, he’s equally famous for producing such blunders as the 1977 King Kong remake, the 1978 Jaws ripoff Orca, Stephen King’s lone directoral effort Maximum Overdrive, and Hannibal Rising. In 2001 he was awarded the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award during the Academy Awards, cementing his legacy and profound influence on film.
