Ridley Scottis a director who has no problem challenging himself, hence his varied film career of sci-fi (Alien, Blade Runner, the upcoming Prometheus), epics (Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven), and dramas (Thelma & Louise, Black Hawk Down, American Gangster). Yet all of those films seem to have some sort of action in them, so it’s surprising to see that after Prometheus, Scott will be directing a movie that will surely be devoid of almost any action sequences: Reykjavik, a political drama about the historic October 1986 meeting between U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet Union General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, in which both leaders surprisingly agreed to reduce its nuclear arsenal at what was arguably the height of the 1980s Cold War. Heck, Sylvester Stallone released the Soviet-bashing Rocky IV just the year before, and would take them on again in Rambo III two years later! And if you judge me for measuring history by Stallone films — well, this probably isn’t the website for you.
Screen Daily announced the film in an article about Headline Pictures as the UK company pushes itself to become a big-time studio. The script for Reykjavik is written by Kevin Hood (Becoming Jane). There’s no other word on who will be involved, but I imagine that once the ball gets rolling on this there will be a lot of coverage. Reagan is among the most popular U.S. presidents, and should Scott and Headline take this film in a less-than-positive direction on Reagan I can imagine some controversy in the media, similar to how a 2003 mini-series about the president (starring James Brolin) was very poorly received.
