Ridley Scott must have hit a streak of nostalgia — his last film was an epic with Russell Crowe, the film he is working on now is set in the same universe as Alien, and now according to Deadline (and everywhere else!) he has officially signed to make another Blade Runner film!
It was announced back in March that Alcon Entertainment, a division of Warner Bros., got the rights to produce prequels and sequels to the 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner but specifically NOT a remake, which made a lot of fans happy (at least the “not a remake” part). In that report it was suggested that Alcon was seeking the involvement of Blade Runner director Ridley Scott, who (as mentioned above) is currently working on Prometheus, a sci-fi film set in the universe of Alien but isn’t specifically about the iconic aliens. It seems like Alcon Entertainment and new Blade Runner producers Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Cynthia Sikes Yorkin, and Bud Yorkin have gotten what they wanted, as Scott is set to both direct and produce the new film.
There’s no word on what exactly this film could end up being — although I speculated back in March that it could be along the same lines as Prometheus, but since Scott isn’t particularly known for making sequels (he directed Hannibal, a sequel to Silence of the Lambs — which he didn’t direct the original — and he’s doing the sort-of sequel Prometheus) the best speculation is that he’ll do something along the lines of Prometheus. After all, nobody’s stupid enough to think anyone could fill the Rick Deckard role originated by Harrison Ford, one of his best roles. Thankfully Alcon Entertainment’s Blade Runner rights exclude remaking the classic original.
There’s not enough information to make a judgement yet (and any fanboys who are already going “Wahhhhhhh!” are likely premature), so we’ll have to see what happens. All we can say is, if there’s one man you’d want playing in Philip K. Dick‘s “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” universe, it’s probably Ridley Scott!
