Make up your mind, Ridley Scott! Back in January I reported that Ridley Scott‘s rumored Alien prequel was instead Prometheus, a non-Alien sci-fi film. Scott has claimed the film he’s making isn’t an Alien prequel, but cryptically added “The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak.” Perhaps we should have taken him more literally, since the Space Jockey — the mysterious creature who appears to be driving the ship the original film takes place on — will be appearing in Prometheus. So is this an Alien film or not? Hit more for all the information we have, plus my speculation!
It appears that Ridley Scott isn’t making a Alien film in the truest sense — this film will not feature the familiar Alien creatures that Scott made a household horror — but it will be set in the same universe as the Alien franchise. Considering the Space Jockey sequence has always been one of the most perplexing in the Alien series (what exactly is it, and what is it doing?), there’s interest there from Alien fans. Of course, since the film isn’t a true entry to the Alien series, those who have little interest in the Alien franchise could try this film out anyway. It’s a pretty good idea as far as marketing goes — best of both worlds — like if George Lucas made a Star Wars film that had nothing to do with Jedi or the Force and just had to do with space pirates or gamblers. Actually, that already sounds better than the prequel films.
Prometheus is set for a March 9, 2012 release. Noomi Rapace (the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) is set to star as scientist Elizabeth Shaw, with Charlize Theron in the other female lead role of Vickers and Michael Fassbender as David. The initial script, which was written by Jon Spaihts (The Darkest Hour) from Scott‘s plot, has been rewritten by Scott and Lost creator Damon Lindelof.
