When you hear the name Rob Zombie a few things come to mind, talented musician, artistic horror director, loves to bring shock and gore to the screen but now prepare to associate him with…hockey? It seems that Zombie will be taking a break from the horror genre and trying his hand at the sports genre.
While I’m all for Zombie branching out and embracing other types of films, I just never expected it to be sports much less hockey. According to Deadline, Zombie will be writing and directing Broad Street Bullies, which is the story about the uprising of the 70’s Philadelphia Flyers.
When asked about why Zombie wanted to pursue the film and what he is expecting from it, he said to expect something along the lines of “Rocky meets Boogie Nights on ice“. That comment alone has me very interested. He continued by saying, “Each character involved is more outrageous than the next. The backdrop of the turbulent year of 1974 is perfect for this ‘stranger than fiction’ sports tale“.
If Zombie is able to achieve what he is envisioning for this film, Kevin Smith might have some competition for his film Hit Somebody. The more I sit and think about this coming to light, the more I can see Zombie bringing some of the blood and horror skills to create a very entertaining hockey film.
With the Lords of Salem wrapping up, I hope Zombie takes little to no time off before starting Broad Street Bullies.
