Robert Downey Jr. might have just ruined the day of millions of fans all over the world by announcing that there are no plans for a fourth installment of the Iron Man franchise.
Fret not, RDJ and Iron Man lovers, it doesn’t mean we won’t see the flamboyant billionaire saving the day again, the actor is signed up for two more sequels to the Avengers, set for a 2015 and 2018 release.
The question is, if new plans are made for a fourth film, will Downey Jr still be the man for the role ? Time isn’t exactly in favour of the actor who is only a year off the big 50 mark, but with the right offer (basically a stupid amount of money) he could be tempted to keep the suit for a little while longer.
The studio has options of course, they could either re-cast Downey Jr’s iconic character Tony Stark (inconceivable, surely) or simply use the upcoming two Avengers films to have Stark pass the mantle over to a new character to take the Iron Man name forward.
The second option would seem smarter, but don’t think Marvel Studios would give up on the draw of Robert Downey Jr. without a fight.
