Robert Downey Jr. is probably one of the most in-demand actors today and is famous for his highly entertaining performances in films like Chaplin, Tropic Thunder, Sherlock Holmes, Due Date, and both Iron Man films. One could wonder what’s next for the accomplished two-time Academy Award nominee… perhaps a musical on the big screen? Hit the jump for more details!
According to E! News, Downey Jr.’s reps have confirmed that the “already musically inclined superhero has signed on to star in a musical bound for the big screen.” He has already proven his musical talent, having wowed audiences with his Golden Globe winning stint on Ally McBeal (he’s featured on the show’s soundtrack!), as well as well his role in the dark musical comedy The Singing Detective back in 2003.
With wife Susan Downey on board to produce, the untitled feature is also backed by Warner Bros. Broadway veterans, Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt, the writers behind Next to Normal, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony-winning musical, will be crafting the story. E! reports that the movie is about “two songwriters of the Great White Way who are forced to take jobs at a theater camp when the show intended to be their big break turns out to be a commercial and critical flop.” Wonder who will play opposite Downey Jr.?
Aside from the actor’s success on the silver screen, the multi-talented performer released a studio album in 2004 by Sony Classical called The Futurist. He sings original tracks, as well as croons a cover of Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile.” Not to mention that two of these tracks were featured in films of his like Wonder Boys and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Currently on Downey Jr.’s plate are the following projects: He is filming the untitled Sherlock Holmes sequel with sidekick Jude Law, will reprise his Iron Man persona, Tony Stark, in The Avengers, and is rumored to be attached to the film version of How to Talk to Girls, based on the successful novel by Ben Karlin. Also, Movie Buzzers has reported on the rumor that he is linked to Oz: The Great & Powerful, under the direction of Sam Raimi (Spiderman), playing the beloved wizard originally from L Frank Baum’s classic tale.
With such a diverse list of accomplishments and an exciting game plan for the future, perhaps it’s a little coy of us to hope that he’ll make an appearance on Glee, like his Iron Man co-star Gwyneth Paltrow, or surprise audiences with a cameo in a musical number during next year’s Oscar ceremony hosted by Anne Hathaway and James Franco. As of now, no other information regarding this project has been revealed.
