Back in the earlier days of comic book films — when they were hardly taken seriously — it was rare for a big-named actor to star in them. Sure, Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman popped up in Superman and Jack Nicholson was a fantastic Joker in Batman, but A-listers tended to stay away from comic book films unless they were getting hefty paychecks (as was the case with Brando, Hackman, and Nicholson).
So now that films like The Dark Knight and The Avengers are both box office smashes and critically acclaimed it’s certainly refreshing to see an increasing amount of A-list Hollywood talent interested in them. However, I don’t think anyone was prepared or expected yesterday’s news from Deadline: that none other than Robert Redford was in talks for a major role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Redford is said to be taking a role with S.H.I.E.L.D., and though I read the entire awesome Winter Soldier arc, I don’t have a clue who he’ll be playing (I think Redford would’ve made a great Nick Fury if they hadn’t gone with Samuel L. Jackson).
If Redford does join the cast, he’ll be alongside Chris Evans (Captain America), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Anthony Mackie (The Falcon), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Frank Grillo (Crossbones), Toby Jones (Arnim Zola), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), and the ever-present Samuel L. Jackson. The film will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo (You, Me and Dupree) from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor: The Dark World) and will be released on April 4, 2014.
