Ghostbusters 3? The Hangover Part III? Zoolander 2? No way. By far the most anticipated comedy sequel that has yet to be made is Anchorman 2. The process to get the film greenlit has been ridiculous, with Will Ferrell explaining numerous times (as I covered in my lengthy editorial here) that Paramount didn’t think it was a moneymaker. That certainly didn’t make sense if you look at the numbers, especially since all of the original’s principal stars agreed to take less than their usual salaries for the sequel to ensure it would get made. Frankly, the fact that Anchorman 2 wasn’t made was probably my biggest “Is Hollywood THAT stupid?” gripe out of all my “Is Hollywood THAT stupid?” gripes. It is, by far, Will Ferrell’s funniest comedy.
But the wait, it seems, is finally over. Making an appearance on Conan was Ron Burgundy himself, and after an extended jazz flute solo he announced the the viewers in the Americas, Spain, Turkey, and the UK (including England) that he had FINALLY come to terms with Paramount on a sequel to Anchorman.
Deadline has more details on the project, mentioning that Adam McKay, who co-wrote the original with Ferrell and directed the original, will play the same roles in the sequel, and the rest of the Channel 4 Action News team — Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, and David Koechner — is coming back! That’s definitely the news I wanted to hear.
As I wrote in my editorial, “We’re lucky that an Anchorman sequel has some flexibility with its timeline. The original was set in 1975, and if another decade passes before we get a sequel I don’t see anything wrong with bringing Ron Burgundy into the 1980s. In fact, I think he’d be even more out-of-place in the Reagan era — I can see Burgundy moderating presidential debates and covering the major events of the 1980s, along with cat shows and panda births.”
Now the real question is, how did 1970s Ron Burgundy travel to 2012 to deliver this news? I don’t know, and I don’t care. All I know is that my favorite Will Ferrell movie is getting a well-deserved sequel. All is right in the world!
