I’ve already made my feelings clear on this in a post earlier this week here, so suffice to say that I begrudgingly report that yes, rumors are true: Will Smith (via his Overbook Entertainment production company) and Jay-Z are teaming up with Sony Pictures for a remake of the musical classic Annie, with the intention of casting Smith‘s daughter Willow Smith in the title role. Click on “more” to check out the rest of the news, including the producers behind the film.
Interestingly enough, the film will be produced by Jay-Z, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, James Lassiter and Ken Stovitz, all of whom (with the exception of newcomer partner Jay-Z) were producers of The Karate Kid remake, which featured Will and Jada Pinkett Smith‘s son Jaden. Whether Jay-Z will be involved in composing new music for the film or not has yet to be determined, but I can’t imagine why he would be involved otherwise. The article from Deadline calls the remake a “re-imagining,” which certainly suggests a dramatic overhaul. Let’s just hope that the Smith’s kids don’t end up like other child stars, okay?
