Last week, I speculated (see article here) over the rumored cast of the upcoming remake of one of Broadway’s classic musicals, Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. The cast is officially just a little more complete (and surprising) with Oscar-winner, Russell Crowe, joining.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Crowe will play the story’s villain, Javert, the man who persecutes heroic, but poverty-stricken Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), father to the long lost Fantine (Anne Hathaway).
It could be speculated that screenwriter William Nicholson’s involvement is what finally drew Crowe in after so much buzz, since Nicholson is the two-time Oscar nominated scribe behind Gladiator (as well as 1993’s Shadowlands). Also this year’s director-in-demand Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) will be helming the project.
Follow Movie Buzzers for all the latest details that emerge about this film set for a 2013 release. Do you think Crowe can take on a musical in this capacity? Are you interested in hearing him sing or possibly seeing the frequent on-screen tough-guy dance? What are your thoughts on this exciting new casting decision?
