Looks like RZA is already blowing up even before his first direcotiral effort, The Man with the Iron Fists, proves itself to mainstream audiences this weekend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Wu-Tang Clan frontman has been signed to direct the action thriller No Man’s Land along with the long in development Genghis Khan biopic.
Genghis Khan was scripted by John Milius who was originally set to direct the film as well but he has stepped aside to be an executive producer so that RZA could take the reigns to bring the 13th Century Mongolian ruler to life. I’m assuming the film would be a biopic war drama which could be pretty cool, the question is will it be better than 2007’s Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan? The movie is set to start production in China next year, which is perfect since RZA is already familiar with the area.
The second film, No Man’s Land, seems something better suited for RZA as it is an action thriller and action is looking to be RZA’s forte. The film “centers on a man who steals a powerful criminal’s diamond that soon proves to be far more valuable than initially thought. With the help of a dancer, he attempts to stay alive and cash in on the jewel. The story takes place during one night and has been described as having echoes of The Warriors.” This is an interesting story but most certainly doesn’t have the same draw for me as Mongol.
RZA will likely take on No Man’s Land first and then move on to the Genghis Kahn epic.
What do you think, are these good movies for RZA or are the studios jumping the gun?
