The return of Sacha Baron Cohen is slowly approaching. I remember when his next film, The Dictator, was announced and how it instantly reminded my of the Chaplin classic, The Great Dictator. Only later did I find out that it was going to be a movie based off of a Saddam Hussein novel, Zabibah and The King. Now, after seeing the first official image of Cohen and re-reading the plot synopsis, it is more likely going to be a blend of the two works.
Ben Kingsley, Jason Mantzoukas, and Anna Faris will star alongside Cohen in the film with Borat/Bruno director, Larry Charles, behind the camera once again.
The logline, which comes from Paramount, describes the film as “the heroic story of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.”
The longer version via SlashFilm states:
[Sacha] Baron Cohen plays a ruthless dictator who heads to the U.S. for a meeting at the United Nations and finds that his number two has replaced him with an unsuspecting sheepherder lookalike. As the dictator wanders the city, he meets the owner of an organic food store… She turns around his dictatorial thinking, and there’s a little romance in it as well.
The image below looks ridiculous but somehow appropriate for Cohen. He’s the only guy, besides Chaplin, that could honestly pull this role and costume off. Just look at his beard, it’s like it hasn’t been washed in months, you could make dreadlocks out of that bad boy. What are your thoughts on the image?
The Dictator is expected to conquer theaters on May 11, 2012.
