Ashton Kutcher has reportedly been cast to play the role of Steve Jobs in the possible biopic film about the late Apple founder’s life. Some praise can be made for choosing a celebrity that somewhat resembles a young Jobs, but Kutcher lacks the proven acting chops to carry a film. Little can be said of Kutcher’s ability to play any role that isn’t about the great American struggle we all face of banging super hot chicks without falling for them. I mean, who hasn’t been through that, right? I’ll grant that Kutcher has had little opportunity to play roles outside his typecast. However, I don’t think playing one of the most beloved figures of modern history is the place to experiment with an actor’s ability.
If we can get Jesse Eisenberg – who can actually act– to play Mark Zucherberg, certainly we can find someone more watchable to play Jobs. The list of actors who would cost far less and likely do far better isn’t a short one. While all this criticism is harsh, I will say this: at least they didn’t pick Justin Timberlake. Even in the chance that Kutcher can pull off the role, he still faces a significant obstacle. When you’re talking about the “Cult of Mac,” you’re talking about a built in core audience that not only loves but identifies with their product and revere the creator of those products as a demigod. For many, Kutcher’s image is far removed from what Apple represents. So while there are many who want to watch Kutcher and many who would want to watch Jobs, is there really anyone who would want to watch a Jobs film with Kutcher in it?
