Hot on the heels of directing the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical in London’s West End and rumors that Skyfall wouldn’t be his last James Bond movie after all — rumors actually suggested that Sam Mendes was negotiating to direct the next TWO James Bond films, which would be Bond 24 and Bond 25.
During the opening of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, HeyUGuys made the smart move of asking Mendes what was the latest on that… actually, to tell the truth, the interviewer didn’t even get his question out! Mendes anticipated the question and said:
In answer to the question you’re going to ask, I don’t know yet. I’m in discussion over the ‘B’ word and I won’t make any decision until this is open. It’s taken a long time to get [Charlie and the Chocolate Factory] open and this has been my focus.
Again, after Skyfall became the highest grossing Bond film of all time, the most critically acclaimed, and won two Oscars (including Bond’s first win for Best Song, something that seems impossible considering how many great Bond songs there have been over the years). 007 producers have signed Skyfall writer John Logan to write the next two sequels and were keen to have Bond 24 out in late 2014, and Bond 25 out in 2017, which would be the 55th anniversary of the first film, or 2018, which would be the 65th anniversary of the character’s debut in literature. But they’re willing to keep waiting on Mendes to come back to direct Daniel Craig again, possibly in Craig’s last two Bond films. But how long will they wait? I guess we’ll see about that!
