NOTE: I’d be remiss not to report that a stuntman was killed during the filming of Expendables 2 this week, with another in critical condition after a planned explosion clearly went horribly wrong. Our condolences go out to the family of the first stuntman, and our hopes for a full recovery go out for the second.
Is it just me, or are we living in a renaissance of 1980s action film heroes? Not only were we treated to The Expendables, but Bruce Willis has A Good Day to Die Hard on his plate, Arnold Schwarzenegger is returning for Last Stand and a possible Terminator sequel, and Sylvester Stallone is busy working on The Expendables 2 (which also features all three men) and Bullet to the Head. To top it all off, we just received word of a release date for Willis’ Reds 2 and now we’re gotten word on the next films for Schwarzenegger and Stallone!
First, Deadline reports that Schwarzenegger has signed on for Black Sands in which the former governor stars as “a loner who wages war against a ruthless weapons manufacturer and his private army in the Southwest.” Curiously, the film was scripted by Skip Woods, who wrote Willis’ A Good Day to Die Hard. It will be directed by Scott Waugh and Mike McCoy (the upcoming Act of Valor). The film will start shooting in April, shortly after Schwarzenegger wraps on Last Stand.
Not to be outdone, Stallone has his next project, too! Variety reports that Stallone will star in The Tomb, in which he will play “the world’s foremost authority on structural security — specifically prisons. His skills are put to the test when he is framed and put in a high-security prison of his own design and must find the person who put him there.” In another curious twist, both Willis and Schwarzenegger considered starring in the film before ultimately passing (I swear, do these guys simply trade scripts?) The script was written by Miles Chapman (who wrote Road House 2… which I didn’t even know existed), with a rewrite by Jason Keller (Machine Gun Preacher). Antoine Fuqua (Brooklyn’s Finest) was set to direct when old Tears of the Sun pal Bruce Willis was involved, but the project is looking for a new director.
So it’s good to hear that our three favorite 80s action stars will continue to entertain us for a few more years to come before they all retire to the old action heroes home!
