Heart of Darkness — the 1902 novella by Joseph Conrad — may not be a title immediately recognizable to film fans, but it should be — the story of a ferry-boat captain who delves into the deepest, darkest parts of the the Congo in search of an insane leader named Kurtz was adapted by Francis Ford Coppola in a Vietnam War setting as Apocalypse Now, one of the greatest films of all time. The story of the hunt of a dehumanized leader after a long prolonged journey has been adapted since — see last year’s Black Death — but there hasn’t been any worthwhile adaptations of Heart of Darkness since Coppola‘s masterpiece.
However, Variety reports that Radar Pictures has enlisted Peter Cornwell (The Haunting in Connecticut) to direct a science fiction version of Heart of Darkness — a concept that is so perfectly suited I can’t believe it hasn’t been done before. The script was written by Tony Giglio (Timber Falls, Chaos) and actor Branden R. Morgan. Although there’s no other details yet, I figured I would report on this story before the inevitable “Stupid Hollywood is remaking Apocalypse Now!” stories popped up by people who don’t know any better.
