The Hobbit got Peter Jackson back in the director chair and then deals were made to get the production back in New Zealand, where the Lord of the Rings trilogy was so memorably filmed. Now fans of Middle-Earth can rejoice in the fact that yet another connection to the Lord of the Rings trilogy has been put into place for The Hobbit: Howard Shore will be returning to score the films!
Shore, who won two Oscars for The Return of the King (For Original Score and Original Song) and won his first for Original Score of The Fellowship of the Ring, has also become Martin Scorsese‘s go-to composer of choice over the last few years (he’s scored most of Scorsese’s films since Gangs of New York), along with dozens of other films since the 1970s. Personally, I couldn’t imagine The Hobbit without a memorable score by Shore. Jog your memory of his significant contribution by listening to his Oscar-winning song from Return of the King, “Into the West,” sung by Annie Lennox below:
The film will begin shooting in early 2011 for an anticipated two-part release in December 2012 and December 2013. Martin Freeman will star as Bilbo Baggins along with Richard Armitage as dwarf Thorin Oakenshield. Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Hugo Weaving (Elrond), and Andy Serkis (Gollum) are expected to reprise their roles from the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
