Martin Scorsese is one of the handful of directors that the general public knows by name, one of the few who truly deserves the “A Film By…” credit (but it seems like everybody gets that these days, even though most of them make you go “WHO?”). His ability to make a masterpiece in almost any genre is unparalleled, so it’s great news for film fans that not only will we be getting Scorsese‘s next film a bit earlier than anticipated, but we also know what the director’s next two films will be — and the latter will be with frequent collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio. Hit more for all the Scorsese goodness!
Hugo Cabret, Scorsese’s first venture into the 3D family film genre, will be released on November 23 with Paramount Pictures now distributing the film rather than Sony. While this is a full month earlier than its original release date, it now faces direct competition from The Muppets and Arthur Christmas, two other family films released that day (not to mention Rise of the Apes, which will also get a chunk of the box office that week!) Hugo Cabret, based on Brian Selznick’s bestselling novel “The Invention of Hugo Cabret,” stars Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jude Law, and Ben Kingsley.
Although Scorsese has is hands full finishing Hugo Cabret and pre-production on his next film, Silence, starring Benicio del Toro, he’s already chosen the project he’ll tackle after that. New York magazine reports that Scorsese will re-team with DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street, which is based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, whose hard-partying and criminal business practices in his financial firm Stratton Oakmont, inspired the film Boiler Room. I’m not sure that America wants to see the infuriating story of yet another white collar criminal, but if anyone can make a hero-to-zero story work, it’s Scorsese. The Wolf of Wall Street was adapted by Terrence Winter, who Scorsese has collaborated with on Boardwalk Empire, the huge hit series on HBO.
Interestingly enough, Deadline reports that Scorsese will film The Wolf of Wall Street first, then Silence. I guess we will have to wait and see — you know we’ll be following the story for you!
