When I asked MovieBuzzers’ readers to take bets on what will be Martin Scorsese’s next film two weeks ago, I listed six films that were rumored to have Scorsese attached as director. Turns out that I have to add a seventh horse to the race. This week Deadline broke the story that Paramount is making deals to have Scorsese direct an adaptation of Furious Love by Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger, which tells the true-life marriage ups and downs of Richard Burton and the recently deceased Elizabeth Taylor, both Hollywood megastars who famously married each other twice. Paramount has already received permission from Burton‘s estate for the film and access to his letters and is now actively trying to receive the same from Taylor‘s estate. The two begin their romance on the set of Cleopatra, perhaps Taylor‘s most memorable role, while both were married, which was quite a scandal at the time.
This project is right up Scorsese‘s alley. As a fan of Classic Hollywood, Scorsese has already directed The Aviator and in 1995 did the excellent documentary series A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies, which produced a coffee table book that sits on my bookshelf to this very day.
So MovieBuzzers readers, do you think THIS will be Scorsese‘s next film, or are you still betting on one of the other six projects that he’s attached to? Let us know your inside tip on this race in the comments below!
