Going into the FilmDistrict panel at Hall H during Comic Con, I didn’t really know what to expect. I hadn’t heard much about the film they were promoting besides the fact it was called Drive, that it starred Ryan Gosling and Carrie Mulligan, and that it was getting rave reviews from the festival circuit.
In attendance for the panel were Carrie Mulligan, Ron Perlman and the director Nicolas Winding Refn. Not a whole lot was said during the panel because they were also sharing the stage with Guillermo del Toro and his film Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. To be perfectly honest, Guillermo seemed much more excited about Drive then the cast did. He gave the film a bunch of praise and said that he loved the film both from a story and a visual standpoint. Perlman was probably the strangest one up there, he didn’t say but maybe 20 words the entire time and surprisingly enough, when fans were allowed to ask question, no one mentioned anything about Hellboy or his future with the film.
After a few questions were answered they showed some clips from the film. Most of the clips shown can be seen in the trailer below. The film looks awesome, almost like a mix between The Transporter and Collateral. There is one scene in particular that really stood out which you get a brief glimpse of in the trailer. It shows Gosling and Mulligan in an elevator kissing and then Gosling attacking the man in there with them. What you don’t see in the trailer is that Gosling really stomps the crap out of the guy’s face and makes it burst. When this was shown, the entire audience erupted in approval. I’m not the biggest Ryan Gosling fan, but I will say that this film makes him look like a bad ass and that he has come along way since The Notebook.
Here is a brief synopsis of the film:
Ryan Gosling stars as a Los Angeles wheelman for hire, stunt driving for movie productions by day and steering getaway vehicles for armed heists by night. Though a loner by nature, Driver can’t help falling in love with his beautiful neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), a vulnerable young mother dragged into a dangerous underworld by the return of her ex-convict husband Standard (Oscar Isaac).
After a heist intended to pay off Standard’s protection money spins unpredictably out of control, Driver finds himself driving defense for the girl he loves, tailgated by a syndicate of deadly serious criminals (Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman). But when he realizes that the gangsters are after more than the bag of cash in his trunk-that they’re coming straight for Irene and her son-Driver is forced to shift gears and go on offense.
Below you can watch the Red Band trailer for the film that was shown during the panel. Be aware the trailer is NSFW.
Drive hits theaters September 16, 2011.
