The second Panel in Hall H on Thursday was the Disney one which featured three of their upcoming films, Frankenweenie, Oz The Great and Powerful and Wreck-it Ralph. I have divided them up into three seperate posts since there is just so much to talk about.
The first part of the panel kicked off with a new trailer for the film which actually gave a bit more insight into the plot and it finally sparked my interest. If you have been reading the site for a while now you will know since last year’s SDCC I have never been a fan of the film and have been skeptical, however after watching the latest trailer my opinion has sort of shifted. The clip showed how after Spike had been brought back to life, some other kids around town try to bring back other creatures to life and things take a turn for the worst.
Tim Burton came out and started talking about how he came up with the idea and how when he was a child he lost his dog and how traumatic it was for him. While he didn’t have much to say, the first audience question was hilarious and the man asked Tim Burton if he is tired of working with Jonny Depp, his response, nope! Next, a group of people dressed up as all of burtons film asked if he preferred making original stories or doing blockbuster/remakes. He said that he enjoys both but it’s always fun to do something you created and thought up. He didn’t really have an answer if he would go back to darker films or keep doing the animated films but he said there is always a passion for dark films.
Along with the Q&A, Burton also showed two additional clips which showed both the humorous side of the film and the turning point. One took place in school with a bunch of the kids in the classroom talking about their theories about why lightning strikes people nightly in their town. The second clip showed the boys trying to bring back a dead goldfish. While they were successful, the goldfish ended up becoming invisible.
A bit of random trivia, a guy asked how they were allowed to say F*** in Beetlejuice and Burton responded that back then they would let you say it once and still get a PG rating so they took advantage of it.
Here is the trailer that was shown during the panel:
