Next up was Sam Raimi‘s latest film, Oz The Great and Powerful which stars James Franco in the titular role. The film is about a man and how he became the wizard we know from The Wizard of Oz. Once he gets to Oz he realizes that he has a second chance in life and has the opportunity to become less selfish.
The film starts in Kansas where he is a magician that lacks people skill and is very selfish. His life in Kansas ends when he is caught sleeping with another man’s wife and escapes by a hot air ballon which hits a tornado, taking him to Oz. Once in Oz, he has to become a great man and be the savior that Oz has been waiting for.
The first trailer for the film was shown and let me just say WOW! the film looks awesome. It starts off in black and white and switches over to color much like the original once Franco lands in Oz. When he lands in Oz, the film look much like Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland , which makes sense since the producer from Alice worked on Oz. The two things that stood out in the trailer to me was that it looks as if there is a new form of the flying monkeys and also at the very end we see a green hand with sharp nails coming over a table, so it looks like we will see the Wicked Witch of the West in her green form some point in the film.
After the footage two of the actress’s from the film came on stage Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis and answered a few questions regarding the film. Nothing too exciting however we did learn that the Ruby slippers will not be making an appearance in the film due to copyright issues and also none of the original character like The Scarecrow, The lion and the Tinman will be in the film either. It takes place way in the past before any of these characters come about.
With a budget of $200 million, I really think moviegoers will be excited for the film one the trailer hits [which you can now watch below!] and also when the film hits theaters next year. Additionally, they gave out tickets for people in attendance to redeem a limited edition movie poster for the film.
