So everyone was wondering how Marvel would follow up The WB panel and what they would do to get the crowd going. Well, what better way then to do a montage of the prior years at comic con and all the major announcements leading up to The Avengers. The video was great and seeing how all of this has come together was truly amazing and finally led into a screen saying “The Future Begins Now!”. After the clip was over, the man responsible for everything we have come to love about Marvel films, Kevin Feige came out on stage.
He immediately jumped into the Ant-Man rumors talking about how everyone has probably heard that there was some test footage out there that Edgar Wright had shot. Just a heads up, Wright earlier in the day was tweeting that he was in London and would not be in San Diego. Well he lied, and Feige brought Wright out on the stage and fans were going absolutely nuts. Wright began explaining how they have been working on an Ant-Man concept for years now and working out a respectable script. He said he did in fact shoot some test footage, but we wouldn’t want to see that now would we?! Of course everyone is screaming yes, so he warned everyone that this was very very rough footage and we would see cables and blue screens, which phase absolutely no one in the audience. We want to see Ant-Man and what we could expect from the film.
The footage was very, very short. It started with two security guards guarding an elevator down a hall. Next we see our first look at Ant-Man in full costume in the vent system. He jumps down and starts running towards the guys and the camera zooms out to show the guards still looking at what appears to be an empty hall. Next Ant-Man reverts to normal size and the guards freak out and draw their guns and begin firing . Ant-Man drops down in size again and runs along the top of one of the guards’ gun and delivers a punch to his face that sends ripples through it. Next he throws the other guard through a window on the side and the elevator they were guarding opens up. Ant-Man jumps in and reappears in normal size and hits the buttom to close the door, giving us a very clear look at the costume.
So at this point everyone is cheering and freaking out and that’s when they start taking a few questions regarding the film.
- Edgar was asked if that was the costume we would see in the film and he responded by saying possibly, that he really liked the way the suit came out and looked on screen and felt it really captured a modern day Ant-Man
- Another asked which comics he drew the material from. His response was that he took some of Ant-Man from the classic versions and some from the silver age comics and sort of mixed them together to create his rendition of Ant-Man
- Of course someone asked who would be playing the role and the crowed started chanting Nathan Fillion’s name. Wright said right now there has been no casting talks nor would he say anything regarding a villain.
After just taking a few question, he asked if everyone would like to see the footage again. Naturally everyone started cheering, and Wright said, “Tough Shit” and ran off stage. So I think for the first time ever in SDCC history someone actually denied the raving crowd a second look at footage when asked if they wanted to see it again.
The footage looked really good for just a test shot and it almost seemed as if Ant-Man could possibly be a comedy by the way Edgar shot the footage. Will that be the direction they will go with it? Who knows, but the Ant-Man I know was always more serious than funny so we shall see. I have faith in Wright and trust he knows what he is doing.
Oh yea and just for fun, Edgar said that Ant-Man had been in Hall H all day and we didn’t even notice him.
