There’s no definite word on what film Martin Scorsese will direct after Hugo, but we can take The Comedian out of the Scorsese Stakes: Variety reports that Sean Penn, who last directed 2007’s Into the Wild, is taking another seat in the director’s chair. Penn will direct DeNiro in the film about an aging insult comic (think Don Rickles) who is placed in a community service program after assaulting an audience member and meets a woman played by Kristen Wiig, who “changes his life.” Awwww.
I was a bit disappointed to hear Scorsese won’t be re-teaming with his old pal DeNiro — especially since the film’s subject matter hearkens back to the wonderful Scorsese/DeNiro collaboration The King of Comedy (pictured above) — and I’m not thrilled that Penn, who isn’t exactly known for comedy (even though he was hilarious as Spicoli a hundred years ago) has been picked to direct, but it’s not like this film is going to be a straight-up comedy anyway. Anyway, when DeNiro turns it on there isn’t a better actor out there.
The Comedian script is by Art Linson, who produced DeNiro in Heat, This Boy’s Life, and The Untouchables, with the comedy bits written by stand-up comic Jeffrey Ross.
