Now let me get one thing straight: I’m not opposed to sequels. A good sequel can be just as enjoyable as the original film, of course, if done properly. I mean, after all, even the Old Testament Bible had a sequel, so sequels can’t be all bad.
But then again, maybe they could be. Producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, who left Miramax several years ago to form The Weinstein Company, have announced a new partnership between the two companies that will produce sequels to some of Miramax’s biggest films of the 1990s and early 2000s. Again, not so bad. But that announcement mentioned that up to TEN sequels are being considered, and some of them are films that make you wonder… why? According to the press release posted on Deadline.com:
The first films to be produced under the agreement will be sequels to Bad Santa, Rounders, and Shakespeare in Love. The other potential sequels and TV projects are Bridget Jones’s Diary, Cop Land, From Dusk Till Dawn, Swingers, Clerks, Shall We Dance, and The Amityville Horror. This partnership augments an existing relationship between the companies on such franchises as Scream 4 (to be released April 15, 2011), Spy Kids 4 (to be released August 19, 2011) and Scary Movie 5.
While I’ve already extolled my hopes for Bad Santa 2 in a previous post, did anyone watch Shakespeare in Love and think “You know what, I just can’t wait until Shakespeare in Love Again!” And frankly, many of the above films already have had sequels of varying quality (From Dusk Till Dawn, Clerks, The Amityville Horror, and Bridget Jones), so I can’t see how much potential for revenue additional sequels to those films might bring. Some of those films are also so tied to their original cast that I can’t imagine a recast version or a remake finding much support (I can’t imagine Swingers without Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, can you?)
…But actually, now that I think about it, I totally would see an overweight Sylvester Stallone in Cop Land 2. That man does know how to make a good sequel. So perhaps this isn’t all bad news.
But what do you think readers? Any interest in any of the aforementioned sequel possibilities?
