As we all know by now, it isn’t just the action blockbusters or teenager book series literary adaptations that get sequels. Still, it’s a heck of a lot easier to franchise an action film since you just have to toss the hero into another balls-to-the-wall adventure. But Variety is reporting that two non-action films that you might not expect to have sequels are gearing up for them, both starring actors who have never starred in sequels to their films before.
First up is a sequel to The Lincoln Lawyer, which starred Matthew McConaughey as lawyer Mickey Haller. Curiously, Lionsgate is moving forward on a sequel to the film (which performed moderately well at the box office) while ABC is also in preproduction on a television series based on the book by Michael Connelly (who will again co-write the sequel with screenwriter John Romano). Whether or not the film will be based off one of Connelly’s other books starring the Haller character (there are three others) remains to be seen.
Perhaps more surprising is that Adam Sandler‘s production company, Happy Madison, is considering a sequel to Grown Ups, which, if you remember, was more-or-less The Expendables of Adam Sandler’s comedian friends. Then again, because it’s Sandler’s highest grossing film worldwide it’s not such of a surprise even though Sandler has never made a sequel to one of his films before. Right now the sequel is only in the scripting stage, with original writer Fred Wolf (who also Grown Up‘s co-star David Spade‘s comedies Joe Dirt, Dickie Roberts, and Black Sheep). The original got awful reviews, but with Sandler’s Jack and Jill uncharacteristically tanking at the box office (at least by Sandler’s usual standards), perhaps it might be a sign that Sandler should start mining his past.
