It’s all about franchising. Face it, if Three Musketeers actually did well this weekend you could bet your ass that the film’s production team would’ve announced The Four Musketeers this morning. Much like Captain America before it — which received the green light for a sequel before the first even hit theaters — Deadline reports that Warner Bros. is showing its faith in the upcoming sequel to Guy Ritchie‘s Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, by already giving the go-ahead for a script for Sherlock Holmes 3.
Drew Pearce has been picked to pen the script, and this already gives the film a connection to main star Robert Downey, Jr. — Pearce is writing Downey’s Iron Man 3. It’s likely that Warner Bros. wouldn’t go ahead with the film without stars Downey and Jude Law (as Holmes and Waston, respectively), so getting a writer that Downey is already comfortable with is a pretty good grab for the studio.
I was a big fan of the first film and I’m anxiously waiting for the sequel, which opens December 16. I could get on board with more Holmes as long as it continues the unique world that Ritchie developed in the first film. As long as the sequel is strong, keep the Holmes coming!
