It’s no secret that Marvel has been planning to bring the iconic franchise back to TV or that Joss Whedon would be involved. We knew that the series would be for ABC since it is owned by Disney who owns Marvel. The only thing we really didn’t know was what the series would be about and what characters from the Marvel universe would be appearing in it. Well today it was announced that ABC gave the green light for a series called none other than S.H.I.E.L.D.
As of right now the only thing we know is that Whedon will be writing the series along with his younger brother Jed and also Maurissa Tancharoen. Joss will try to direct a few episodes as long as his schedule allows for it, because he does have to continue working on another small project of his, The Avengers 2. The three will also be executive producers on the series along with Jeph Loeb (Marvel TV) and Jeffery Bell.
There is no word on what the series will consist of or who will star in the series, however I wouldn’t get your hopes up to see many if any of the stars from The Avengers besides maybe Cobie Smulders (Agent Hill) and possibly Samuel L. Jackson at least for the pilot episode as Nick Fury. Many have speculated that the series will probably focus on some of the lesser known heroes in the Marvel universe which could lead to eventual solo films.
Production on the shows pilot is set to begin immediately so I would imagine a premiere date along with information on the cast and plot will start to trickle out over the next few months. It should also be noted that this is not the only TV series Marvel has planned. We can’t forget about the Hulk TV series that Guillermo del Toro has be working on for quite some time now as well for ABC, although with the love Mark Ruffalo‘s Hulk got from fans of The Avengers, he might be too big for a TV series and might get a film instead.
