Well this is something I definitely haven’t seen yet. Studios, directors and actors are always trying to find new ways to get a project going, the latest craze being kickstarter to get movement on a project. While that’s all well and good, we haven’t seen anyone with actual funding take to the Internet to try and find the talent for their film.
Well that’s what Sion Sono is doing for his next picture Tokyo Tribes, a live-action adaptation of Inoue Santa’s manga of the same name. One to always go against the grain, Sono is using having open auditions via YouTube to cast the leads in his futuristic street gang picture. Normally when a studio wants to get some authentic street cred it still goes the route of having agencies search for the talent via auditions in the proper areas. Instead, Sono is giving everyone a chance to step into the spotlight to find the most deserving and appropriate actors for his new film.
Will the experiment work? Knowing Sono, it probably will. You can check out the YouTube page here which has an intro from Sono and Inoue Santa along with a few sample auditions.
