It’s seems like forever that we’ve been talking about a possible sequel to the hit 1996 hit film, Independence Day. Will it happen? Won’t it happen? Who will be in it, who won’t be in it? These ongoing questions never seem to be fully answered, but it’s beginning to look one one of them finally has been, and it relates to Will Smith.
In June last year (2013) the sequel was finally given a release date of July 3rd, 2015. The rumours were that Will Smith would NOT be appearing in the sequel because the star was too expensive to hire. Director Roland Emmerich said there were two versions of the script, one including Smith’s character, Captain Steve Hiller, and one without. So it looked like the project would be fine without Smith, obviously better with him, but there was a contingency plan. Then things took a U-turn and it was reported that Smith was in talks to star in the upcoming sequel -presumably lowering his asking price to do so.
Former cast members Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman will be reprising their roles and it was said to be “looking good” that Smith would now be re-joining the cast of former stars. While there has been no official statement from Smith at this time, it is now being reported (and by an apparent ‘reliable source’) that Smith’s involvement in the film is now officially dead, and he will not be starring in it.
So while it looks that’s it for hopes of seeing Will Smith back in the drivers seat…or whatever you call the seat of an alien spaceship, you can imagine these things are never set in stone, but with a 2015 release date, production needs to start soon so it looks more and more likely these reports are actually true and we’ll have to settle for seeing Smith in another awesome film like After Earth! Oh, that’s right…
