Thank you Harvey, thank you oh so much. In a movie that’s going to make so many American genre fans happy, Harvey Weinstein and Korean director Bong Joon-Ho have finally come to release terms for his new film Snowpiercer, and it’s going to be the original directorial cut that was released internationally. You should see the jig I did when I read this news. I’m so excited (it is my most anticipated film of the year).
The two had a disagreement regarding the length and pacing of the new film, which has performed very well in both Korea and France and has received excellent reviews from those who’ve seen it. When the contract to release the film was initially signed, TWC was going to give Snowpiercer, which stars Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Ed Harris, Kang-ho Song and Octavia Spencer, a wide release but apparently the director turned in a cut that was longer than what Harvey wanted/agreed to with the sales agent. It seems that after months of back and forth and an attempt to come to a solution, instead of a wide release TWC will give the film a limited release, most likely in major cities, and possibly release it on VOD before the film rolls out to other markets across the states.
I am extremely happy with this decision. Granted, I live in a major metropolitan area which will allow me the opportunity to see this in a theater, but I also think that, from a commercial perspective, this will be a challenging film but one that would thrive on a limited release and VOD. I’m hoping that the strong reviews will be enough to help grow it’s initial release, ultimately leading to a wide one, much the way TWC released The King’s Speech, which started in one theater.
All I can say is fans of Bong will rejoice and would have searched out the director’s version anyway so now at least it won’t be hard to track this down.
