Since the box office success of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, childhood fairy tale stories are Hollywood’s latest hot commodity. Three different versions of the Grimm Brothers’ classic Snow White are currently in development for the big screen.
According to MovieWeb.com, Snow White and the Huntsman is a “revisionist take,” written by Evan Daugherty (He-Man and Masters of the Universe). Under the guide of commercial director Rupert Sanders, the film expands the role of the huntsman as a mentor to the title character, and not a love interest, while her Prince is waiting somewhere in the wings. Meanwhile, Snow White is shackled to the huntsman in the forest, taught about survival, and eventually set free.
Along with Relativity Media (The Social Network), Brett Ratner (director of X-Men: The Last Stand) is tackling another retelling, Brothers Grim: Snow White, which is rumored to be edgier and more adult, yet supposedly a faithful adaptation to the myth. Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie) is reported to direct. Also, there’s a lot of speculation over Golden Globe winner, Natalie Portman (Black Swan), to play the famous character.
Lastly, Disney has Snow White and the Seven for director Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend). This will be a fantasy / adventure focusing on a 19th century British girl living in Hong Kong who trains with seven Shaolin monks.
Along with Snow White, other great female characters from fairy tales are coming back to life, including Little Red Riding Hood in 2011’s Red Riding Hood, starring Amanda Seyfried (Letters to Juliet), Maleficent, Tim Burton’s take on Sleeping Beauty’s nemesis, and rumors are swirling about a rags to riches Cinderella remake as well.
Which one will come out on top? Can the magic of Alice in Wonderland be repeated? Guess we’ll have to see, once upon a time…
