I guess after a while you become tired of being known mainly as the creator of one of the most popular television series of all time, as David Chase (creator of the HBO hit The Sopranos) has decided to direct his first feature film. Although it isn’t the long-rumored-but-seemingly-unlikely Sopranos film, he’s decided to bring some old friends along from The Sopranos for the project: Sopranos star James Gandolfini will co-star and Sopranos co-star ‘Little’ Steven Van Zandt (of the E Street Band fame) will serve as executive producer and music supervisor for Chase‘s upcoming Twlyght Zones. Hit “more” to learn the plot details and additional information about the film’s cast after the jump.
As reported on Deadline, Twlyght Zones revoles around an Italian-American New Jersey family (like The Sopranos), but unlike The Sopranos it seems to have nothing to do with organized crime. For one thing, it is set in the 1960s and tells the story of an up-and-coming New Jersey rock band named The Twlyght Zones. The father of Douglas, the lead singer (played by John Magaro), will be played by Gandolfini, who struggles with his son’s obsession with a style of music he loathes. Molly Price (How Do You Know) will co-star as Douglas’ mother, and Brad Garrett (TV’s Everybody Loves Raymond) has also joined the cast in an unspecified role.
What I find most curious about this film is that this plot can easily be a comedy or a drama depending on how the story is approached — it could either be a deep father/son generation gap drama or a “damn kids with their damn loud music!” comedy. Since Chase wrote the script and is directing, I’d imagine the film will be a drama (and, with Van Zandt‘s help, have an excellent soundtrack, too!) Interestingly enough, Chase himself played in several unsuccessful bands in New Jersey in the late 1960s and early 1970s (as did Van Zandt), so it’s entirely possible that parts of this film could be partially autobiographaical.
