The Amazing Spider-Man, Sony’s reboot of a franchise that only started a decade ago, isn’t set for release until next summer, but, like all Spider-Man films before it, it’s likely to be a major blockbuster (that is, if that damn Broadway show doesn’t let up and makes the character as radioactive commercially as that spider that bit Peter Parker). So it’s not really a surprise that The Hollywood Reporter says that James Vanderbilt, the writer behind The Amazing Spider-Man, has already been hired to script the second film for the Andrew Garfield version of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
Curiously, Vanderbilt was the choice to write Spider-Man 4 for Sam Raimi when Sony intended that series to continue. So obviously Vanderbilt is doing something Sony likes if he’s been kept around this long on the franchise. Let’s hope that Vanderbilt, who also wrote Zodiac and The Losers, can churn out something better than Spider-Man 3 or the aforementioned Broadway debacle!
The Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield as the titular hero, Emma Stone as lady love Gwen Stacy, Rhys Ifans as The Lizard, Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, Sally Field as Aunt May, and Denis Leary as Captain George Stacy. The film is directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer). The film is set for a July 2012 release in 3D.
