For some reason this didn’t post yesterday, so my apologies.
I can’t believe I missed this piece of news last night! Twitch Film apparently has found out that Spike Lee is in talks to direct the US remake of Oldboy.
The remake of Oldboy has been mostly rumor based with both Will Smith and Steven Spielberg showing interest in the project back in 2008. Park Chan-Wook’s 2003 modern day classic is a disturbing Korean revenge flick that also happens to be one of my favorite films to date, which is probably why I am against Hollywood taking a whack at its own version.
I’m not exactly sure how I feel about Spike Lee directing the film, granted I’ve only seen two of his films, but I do think it is better than having Spielberg in the chair. This film needs an independent mind behind it and one that isn’t afraid of breaking barriers and getting down and dirty, which I Lee seems to do on the regular.
What are your thoughts on this news? Do you support the possible selection of Lee or are you like me and completely reject the idea of remaking this film? Let us know in the comments section below.
