Tonight was the night of Operation Early Bird which allowed fans of The Dark Knight Rises a chance to see the first 6 minutes of the film which will be screened in front of select IMAX showings of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol this weekend. All in all the experience was pretty enjoyable and we even came away with t-shirts which you can see below. Only complaint I had was that our screening was done at the museum of nature and science and in an Omni IMAX theater. Basically it’s like going into a planetarium and being surrounded by this huge screen above you, wouldn’t recommend seeing a film of this caliber this way. Anyway below I have included first, the non-spoiler description of what went o,n and then below I will go into much more detail about what was shown. So if you don’t want to know much I would recommend not reading past the picture of the Tshirts they gave out.
In a nut shell you don’t get to see a whole lot but what you do see is pretty freaking awesome. Without going into too much detail the prologue is pretty much just like the one for The Dark Knight. We get to see an event take place (in The Dark Knight it was the Bank Heist) and then are introduced to our villain which, in this one, is Bane (Tom Hardy). It’s a very action packed scene and will keep you on edge the entire time. After the scene you get to see a brief trailer which shows the main players in the film along with some footage of the tumbler and the Batwing, and a glimpse of the shot where the poster that was released this weekend came from.
One might think that Christopher Nolan can do no wrong especially in 6 minutes, however there is an issue and I hope it’s fixed by the time the film hits in July. If you didn’t know Bane wears a mask/respirator that funnels in gas to help him control his pain. Doing so his voice is very muzzled and very difficult to understand what he is saying in the scene. You really have to listen closely to understand what he is saying but you can make it out. They actually showed the prologue twice so I was able to listen and understand it better the second time around.
I’m going to actually recommend people to not watch the Prologue. Why you might ask? After watching it, I wanted more, I wanted the rest of the film right then and it sucks that I now have to wait until July to see the rest of the film. It might be best to not watch it and not have the heart break of going home with the same feelings I have right now. Regardless though this film is going to be amazing and will probably be THE FILM of 2012, sorry Avengers.
Pretty sweet shirts huh? Now on to the SPOILER ZONE!
Starting from the beginning,
We hear a voice over of Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) giving a speech about the late Harvey Dent. First image is Gordon standing at the podium at what I’ll assume is Town Hall in Gotham. He ends his speech with “I believe in Dent” and then cuts away. Next we see a vehicle in an unspecified location but looks to be somewhere in Africa or South America. The vehicle pulls up to a plane and is greeted by a few soldiers and a CIA agent (I don’t know who the actor is). The driver of the vehicle advises that he has the prisoner and also two others . Agent says they only have room for one but can make an exception. We are introduced to Dr. Leonid Pavel (Alon Aboutboul) who is the prisoner being transferred. The scene cuts to the plane in the air and the Agent attempting to get information about Bane out of Dr. Pavel but to no such luck. He then tries to scare the other two hostages to tell him something about Bane and where to find him. He opens the door to the plane and says the first to release information gets to stay on the plane the other gets thrown out. This tactic doesn’t work but one does speak. A very eerie voice is heard and when the bag is taken off the hostages head we get out first look at Bane. There is some dialogue exchanged here about what the doctor knows and why did Bane turn himself in and what his angle was but the best line was when the agent asks what would happen if he took that mask off and Bane responds with something along the line with “It will cause me great pain” or “I’ll be in a great deal of pain” something along those line. Another plane appears and a few soldiers jump out and onto the CIA plane. They hook up a few wires and shoot out the windows in the plane. The plane begins to fall apart and is turned strait up and the tail ripped off. The Soldiers repel with a body bag into the plane killing the rest of the CIA agents. Bane grabs the doctors arm and does a quick transfer of blood to the body. The second hostage that was with Bane begins to hook himself to one of the wires and Bane tell him no, hostages response, “The Fire Shall Rise”. Bane hooks himself and the doctor to the wire and is lifted out of the plane as the other is dropped from the sky. This is when the prologue ends and we get a bunch of quick shots of the film. You see Batman (Christian Bale), then a shot of John Blake ( Joseph Gordon-Levitt) Catwoman (Ann Hathaway) on the batpod, Bane and Batman throwing punches and the big riot. You get to see the Batwing fly a short bit and also the famous tumbler. Then the final scene which was the best one in my opinion, Bane walking slowly holding a broken Batman mask in his hand and all you hear is him breathing.
