After writing and directing himself back to Hollywood prominence with Rocky Balboa, Rambo, and The Expendables, it seems Sylvester Stallone is ready for a break from behind the scenes. Not only is Stallone set to star in Headshot, a film he didn’t write and won’t direct, but the sequel to The Expendables — which is currently in preproduction — will also not feature Stallone as writer or director.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Stallone has been meeting with other directors to take on The Expendables 2 although no names have been revealed yet. Furthermore, the film’s script has been written by David Agosto and Ken Kaufman based on ideas from Stallone. Agosto is a newcomer, but Ken Kaufman has written a ridiculously varied list of films (In The Army Now, Muppets From Space, Space Cowboys, The Missing, and Curious George!) That’s not the resume of someone I expected to tackle Stallone‘s baby, but as long as it’s good I could care less who’s writing it!
It’s expected that most of the original cast — including Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin, and Bruce Willis — will be retuning for the sequel. Now that he has more free time, former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger could likely play a larger role in the sequel, too. Rumors have suggested that Stallone wants everyone from Jean-Claude Van Damme to Chuck Norris to Charlie Sheen in the film, and frankly all I can say is the more the merrier!
