With names like Matthew Vaughn, Ben Affleck and others in the mix, it looks like Disney has finally settled on J.J. Abrams to direct the first film in the new Star Wars series based on a script that Michael Arndt is working on, Deadline reports.
To be honest, I’m both surprised and not surprised. I’m surprised because Abrams worked on Star Trek, which is almost like a betrayal to the trekkies, but at the same time he is known to make pretty entertaining films, but without knowing the tone of the script I can’t be sure if I approve of this choice. I was personally pulling for Vaughn since his films tend to be pretty awesome and always have a theme of darkness in them, though Abrams may nail that down in Star Trek Into Darkness. Keep in mind, Abrams has only actually directed four features, though that’s not necessarily a bad thing. One thing is for sure, he’s probably done with Star Trek for a while.
What do you think of this choice? Is he the right guy or are there better contenders (who would actually consider the gig-not Spielberg or del Toro) that should have had first crack at the feature return of Star Wars?
