We haven’t done many news posts on the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII simply because it’s difficult to know what’s fact and what’s fiction now that Disney owns the beloved franchise and is planning to make a new trilogy and countless spinoff movies. It’s well-known that Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill are expected to reprise their roles from the original trilogy, and Disney is looking for a new actor to play Chewbacca because of original actor Peter Mayhew‘s health issues. We know that John Williams will be doing the music for the new trilogy. Recently, it was revealed that Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3) will have his script rewritten by director J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan (who co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi). We also know that just about everyone with a well-connected agent is auditioning for a role in the film. Now we finally have a confirmed release date: December 18, 2015. And that’s driving some Star Wars fanatics crazy.
Why? Because every Star Wars movie has come out in May (except for the 2008 CGI movie Star Wars: The Clone Wars), certain fans have been blasting all over the internet how WRONG it is to release the film in December. I don’t get the anger. The change of release date is primarily because Episode VII won’t be ready in time for May 2015 (and Disney would hate to compete with the second Avengers movie, also set for a May 2015 release), and why wait until May 2016 just because? May has become Disney’s Marvel month over the last few years, so December could easily become the company’s Star Wars month for years to come. If fans REALLY want it to be released in May, they can hold off on watching it until May 2016, right?
