Aww… Star Wars, nothing but Star Wars!
Give me those Star Wars!
Don’t let them end!
Oh, Star Wars!
If they should bar wars
Please let these Star Wars stay!
It’s been a few decades since that Bill Murray SNL skit, but it seems like Disney is finally going to make Nick the Lounge Singer’s dreams come true by making sure Star Wars NEVER end. That’s because in addition to the new trilogy — with Episode VII being directed by J.J. Abrams — Disney had announced a spinoff movie with be directed by Chronicle‘s Josh Trank, who is also directing the Fantastic Four reboot for Fox.
This marks the second announced Star Wars spinoff movie. Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards will direct the previously announced one, already set for a December 16, 2016 release. Though the subjects of either film are yet to be announced, it’s clear that Disney is hoping to release a new Stars Wars movie every year or so once Episode VII relaunches the franchise.
In comments to Variety, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said, “We’re thrilled to welcome Josh into the family. He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”
“The magic of the ‘Star Wars’ universe defined my entire childhood,” Trank added. “The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time.”
