Everyone knows Steve Carell as the lovable Michael Scott but he is looking to do a complete 180, tackling a role that’s ever so serious, requires a huge prosthetic nose and is based on a true story of a wrestler (Channing Tatum) who sees an opportunity to emerge from his successful brother’s (Mark Ruffalo) shadow and compete in the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
In the upcoming drama Foxcatcher directed by Bennett Miller, Carell plays John du Pont, the eccentric millionaire who wanted to coach an athletic team but ends up luring wrestler Mark Schultz into a world where the only possible outcome is in a dark place no one wants to be. Firstly, as a former wrestler this film automatically interests me but then you top on this eerie character played by Carell and you’ve got my attention for the entire duration of the picture.
This is clearly Steve Carell’s darkest role to date and pretty close to the peak of his popularity and, though the genre is different, it actually sparks a nice parallel to Jim Carrey’s career when he took on a lead role in The Cable Guy when his popularity was surging. The trailer is very ominous and looks like its going to be a gripping piece of cinema that will be one of the surprise hits come this December when all the big holiday films hit theaters.

FOXCATCHER is a psychological drama directed by Academy Award nominee Bennett Miller (MONEYBALL) and starring Golden Globe winner Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Academy Award nominee Mark Ruffalo, Academy Award winner Vanessa Redgrave and Sienna Miller. The film was written by E. Max Frye and Academy Award nominee Dan Futterman. FOXCATCHER tells the story of Olympic Gold Medal-winning wrestler Mark Schultz (Tatum), who sees a way out from the shadow of his more celebrated wrestling brother Dave (Ruffalo) and a life of poverty when he is summoned by eccentric multi-millionaire John du Pont (Carell) to move onto his estate and train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Desperate to gain the respect of his disapproving mother, du Pont begins “coaching” a world-class athletic team and, in the process, lures Mark into dangerous habits, breaks his confidence and drives him into a self-destructive spiral. Based on actual events, FOXCATCHER is a gripping and profoundly American story of fragile men who pinned their hopes for love and redemption on a desperate obsession for greatness that was to end in tragedy.
Foxcatcher was opening on December 20, 2013 but has now been pushed to 2014.
