Empire was able to snag an interview with The Adventures of Tintin and Warhorse director Steven Spielberg recently and aside from discussing his two projects that are about to be released, Empire was able to get some interesting information on Jurassic Park 4 and Indiana Jones 5.
In regards to Jurassic Park 4, Spielberg said,
The screenplay is being written right now by Mark Protosevich. I’m hoping that will come out in the next couple of years. We have a good story. We have a better story for four than we had for three…
This question was asked as well at the San Diego Comic Con this year and at that time he did say they were working on something but he didn’t give any of the writers names. Glad to see he is addressing the fact that the third film was a bit of a let down.
When asked about Indian Jones 5,
You have to ask George Lucas. George is in charge of breaking the stories. He’s done it on all four movies. Whether I like the stories or not, George has broken all the stories. He is working on Indy V. We haven’t gone to screenplay yet, but he’s working on the story. I’ll leave it to George to come up with a good story.
It’s great to see that there is something being done for a fifth Indy film, but the best part of the interview came when they asked him about all the criticism surrounding Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls. Surprisingly enough he sides with the fans in a sense,
I sympathise with people who didn’t like the MacGuffin because I never liked the MacGuffin. George and I had big arguments about the MacGuffin. I didn’t want these things to be either aliens or inter-dimensional beings. But I am loyal to my best friend. When he writes a story he believes in – even if I don’t believe in it – I’m going to shoot the movie the way George envisaged it.
I guess the biggest question that wasn’t addressed is if they are still in the early developmental stages for the film, would Harrison Ford be up to reprise the role one last time in say 3-5 years? That would put Ford in his mid 70’s, which would lead one to believe that the fifth Indy film might focus more around his son Mutt (Shia LaBeouf). Still it would be a little strange to see a 75ish old Indy with a 20 something year old son, heck even when Sean Connery played Indy’s dad in The Last Crusade, he was only 59. Many questions will need to be answered way before there is a finalized script in place.
