It took some doing but the sequel to the popular Zach Snyder film 300 is finally underway and we have our first look at the feature thanks to USA Today. Originally tittled Xerxes, then Battle of Artemesia and now 300: Rise of an Empire, the Noam Murro directed feature takes place at around the same time as 300 with the main difference being that the battle will be at sea. Sullivan Stapleton plays the Greek general Themistokles who will command his fierce troops at sea against Xerxes’ (Rodrigo Santoro) dirty worker and second in command, Artemesia (Eva Green).
Noam Murra commented to the paper that:
[Rise of an Empire] happens over time in many different locations. The opportunities for the six distinct battles are even greater with different locations and tactics… The few against the many is still here. It’s hundreds vs. hundreds of thousands. It’s about taking on the mightiest power of all with wisdom and tactics.
The film, whcih was co-written by Snyder, will sylistically look similar to the original feature and Frank Miller graphic novel but the added element of fighting at sea and not being restricted to a closed off passageway should make things very interesting for the audience. Originally I wasn’t that excited about the feature but now I’m curious.
Above is the first still from a scene at sea and below is our first look at Stapleton as Themistokles. 300: Rise of an Empire is set to rage into theaters on August 2nd.
